— ABOUT GRADIENT YARD

A School Built on Steps, Not Shortcuts

We teach AI development the way a yard is worked — one terrace at a time, each level cleared before the next is cut.

— OUR STORY

How Gradient Yard Came to Be

Gradient Yard started from a straightforward observation: most people who want to work with machine learning models are not fresh graduates with eight hours a day free — they are engineers with jobs, analysts with deadlines, and managers whose teams have been asked to add model work to existing responsibilities. The courses available to them were either too shallow to be useful or structured for students who could attend full-time.

The school was formed in Kuala Lumpur to address this directly. The founding team had spent several years delivering internal training for engineering organisations across Malaysia and Singapore, and the pattern they kept seeing was the same: people learned the tools but not the reasoning behind them, because the curriculum was built for speed rather than retention. Gradient Yard is the attempt to do the opposite.

The name describes the design principle. A gradient is a slope — a rate of change. A yard is a place where things are built and reworked in stages. The two ideas together describe what we try to produce: learning that changes what a person can do, in increments they can see and verify before moving further.

Our tracks are built for three kinds of learner. The first is a working professional who cannot leave their job but wants to build a working understanding of machine learning across twelve weekends. The second is someone between roles or on study leave who can commit full days for fifteen weeks to build a portfolio project under mentored conditions. The third is an engineering team whose employer wants to move existing staff into model work using the team's own internal problems as the training material.

— THE PEOPLE

Who Runs the Tracks

Instructors at Gradient Yard have backgrounds in applied machine learning, software engineering, and data science. None are primarily academics — all have spent time building or maintaining models in commercial or research settings.

AR

Ahmad Razif

Lead Curriculum Designer

Ahmad spent six years in model deployment at a fintech firm in KL before joining Gradient Yard. He designed the terraced curriculum structure used across all three tracks.

SL

Siew Ling

Weekday Intensive Lead

Siew Ling comes from a background in NLP research and has worked on fine-tuning projects for both Malaysian and Singapore-based clients. She leads the Weekday Intensive Track and mentors participants through portfolio projects.

PN

Priya Nair

Team Programmes Coordinator

Priya coordinates all Team Upskilling Programmes, handling curriculum design workshops with employers and ensuring that exercises are built around each team's actual stack rather than generic datasets.

— HOW WE WORK

Standards and Protocols

We apply a small number of clearly stated practices across all tracks. They are not policies invented for a brochure — they reflect decisions made after seeing what did and did not work across four years of running programmes.

Ordered Curriculum

Every topic is sequenced so that prerequisite concepts are applied before dependent ones are introduced. We do not skip steps because the schedule is tight.

Written Exercise Feedback

Instructors review each submitted exercise and respond in writing to the specific submission — not with a generic rubric comment.

Data Privacy

Personal data collected during enrolment is used only for administering the track. We do not share it with third parties for marketing purposes.

Curriculum Reviews

At the end of each cohort, instructors review which topics generated the most questions and whether the sequencing produced the expected outcomes. Adjustments are made before the next intake.

Accurate Completion Records

We record what was covered, not what we wish had been covered. If a section was not completed, the record says so. We do not issue records that overstate what a participant did.

Employer Alignment (Team Tracks)

For team programmes, we hold a curriculum design workshop with the employer before writing any material. The curriculum is reviewed and signed off before the programme starts.

— OUR APPROACH

AI Education That Moves at the Right Speed

The field of machine learning has developed faster than the training infrastructure that supports it. Most people who want to understand and use these methods are working backwards from an end state — they know what models can produce and are trying to fill in the mechanics.

At Gradient Yard, we start from the mechanics. The Weekend Entry Track opens with Python and statistics not because they are prerequisites to be dispensed with quickly, but because a solid understanding of them changes how someone reads a model's output and diagnoses its failures. These are not weeks to get through — they are the foundation that makes the rest interpretable.

The Weekday Intensive Track extends this to deep learning architectures, training workflows, and evaluation design. The emphasis on evaluation is deliberate. Many practitioners can train a model; fewer can specify what a good result looks like before training begins, and fewer still can explain why a result that looks good on a benchmark might behave differently in production.

The Team Upskilling Programme is different in structure but shares the same underlying philosophy. Engineers who already know how to build software often find that the gap between what they know and what model work requires is narrower than they expected — but the gap that remains is specific to their stack, their data, and their organisation's risk tolerance. Generic training does not close that gap. A programme built around their actual problems has a much better chance.

We are based in Kuala Lumpur and work with participants and teams across Malaysia. All tracks are delivered online except where a team programme is specifically arranged for on-site delivery. Sessions are conducted in English.

We do not offer employment connections, industry partnerships for hiring, or career placement services of any kind. We are a school. We teach. What participants do with what they learn is their own business, and we think that is the right way for it to be.
